Field Trips 2023 – 24

There is a charge of £ 3.50 per person for each half day trip, and £7.00 for each full day trip.  Some trips may attract extra costs such as travel, catering, admission charges and, in some cases, accommodation. These will be outlined to members in advance, wherever possible.

Non-members and guests from other organisations are always most welcome. However, if you are a guest, or inviting guests, it is an essential courtesy to inform the visit coordinator and Field Trips Committee Member – Bob Appleyard.  If numbers have to be limited on some trips then regular HGG members will take priority. Those attending field meetings do so at their own risk. Huddersfield Geology Group can accept no liability for injury, theft or loss however caused.

weekend 14th – 16th June 2024 This year’s residential weekend will be in Upper Teesdale. Proposed sites of interest include Cow Green Reservoir and Cauldron Snout; High Force; Low Force; Gibsons Cave and Holwick Scars.  These sites will provide a greater understanding of the Whin Sill; carboniferous limestone and a range of facies and fossils; regional structures and mining.  Those planning to attend should seek accommodation early as this is a popular holiday destination.  It is suggested you book Friday and Saturday nights to maximise field time on each day.  Please apply as soon as possible so that we can make travel and other logistic arrangements.Trip Leaders:  Bob Appleyard and Scott Alexander.
Saturday 14th September
Saturday 14th September.  Following on from our residential weekend in Swaledale, this one-day field trip will visit another extensive lead mining area on the moors above Grassington.  We will start with a visit to the Grassington Folk Museum, before travelling up onto the moors.
The day will include an overview of the Dales landscape and geology.  Further details will be provided after a planning visit.  Trip Lead: Bob Appleyard
Sunday 13th October Many of our regulars were unable to attend the field trip to Shedden Clough (Burnley) back in September 22. We’ve decided to re-run this field trip. It is also proposed to make it a joint trip with the Oldham Geology Group. The day includes: exploration of the limestone hushings, an explanation of the geochemistry, interpretation of geology maps and landscapes. Trip lead: Bob Appleyard.

Please e-mail us for further details or contact Bob Appleyard at HGGFieldTrips@gmail.com

Further details will be provided through this page on the web site and/or directly to those expressing an interest in attending.

As always, we welcome volunteers to assist in running field trips and your suggestions for future trips are most welcome.
